Ancient Greece

Ancient Greek was three centries before the classic age. Greek civilization changed over the history of time but oringinated in the land of Greece and Islands of the Aegean sea, which is located between Greece and Turkey between 800 B.C. and 500 B.C.

This time period was well known in history for their advances in poetry, art, technology and was the age where polis/ city-state was created. This became the important feature of Greek political life for a long period of time.

The reason why Historians call it the ‘Greek dark ages’ is because like other ares people didn’t really know much about this time so potentially it was lost in history. Before the Archaic period people lived all around Greece in small communites, where they built agora’s which is known in todays society as a market place and was a community meeting status. In this time they raised armies which was set to protect specific Gods and Goddesses as a sign of respect.

Well known Gods such as Zeus, God of thunder was well known but today we know them as Greek myths.

Houses in Ancient Greece

Houses in Ancient Greece excluding building like the Pantheon were very plain and simple. The walls were made out of sun-dried mud bricks, foundation was stone, clay tiles for roofing and packed mud flooring. Colours used through interiors were mostly red, blue and gold. All bedrooms were arranged to an open courtyard to accommodate to the hot temeratures to allow cold air to flow through.

One thing I found while researching about the styles of houses back in this era was that they had rooms specifically for females only and male only rooms as well as having family rooms. I feel like the idea carried on through but we in the future, have used this idea of seporate gender rooms for places such as backpackers and nowdays families all live together under one roof. Comparing interior from then and now has changed a lot but still have simularities in simplicity and using natural products.

Furniture

Greeks were highly influenced by Egyptians when it came to furniture but had a strong emphesis on comfort and its softness sufficient to the human body. Greek furniture was usually made out of wood. Rarely it would be made out of stone or metal.

Five types of furniture:

• stools

• couches

• chests

• small tables

• chairs

One type of stool

Diphros Okladias: Was moveable and had no specific place in the home.

Folding X style stool was designed by the Egyptians but Greeks used that design and covered it in fleece to increase the comfort.

This style of stool is closely related to foldable outdoor chairs which we use mostly for camping and for extra entertaining purposes. Even though ancient greek civilization was hundreds of years ago, they still have inspired chairs used in present time, just refined to suit the purpose.

Ancient Greece Mood board

This mood board represents the history of Ancient Greece. Even though this civilisation lived hundreds of years ago, the remains are still present and shows the type of strong durable material they used to create beautiful craftsmanship that has been used in current life.

Greek inspiration in present time

I came up with this simple design to help emulate the inspiration from Ancient Greece. I used a different shade of the colours commonly used in Ancient Greece to make it more modern as well as keeping everything very simple and clean with a simple wall colour and natural stone flooring. pops of gold to help show the wealth especially bringing through marble which is shown on the base of the lamp which structurally helps the lamp stand like they used back in ancient time for pillars. The rug shows a pattern which was strongly used in ancient history.
