Arts and Crafts Movement

The Arts and Craft Movement was the name given to the British decorative arts, garden design and architecture in the second half of the 19th Century (1880-1920).

In this period the Industrial Revolution took over Britain with factories producing a mass production of large quantities of items. People didn't like how plain and boring houses looked because they all look the same.

The Arts and Craft movement focused on quality rather than quantity and the products that were produced were handcrafted rather than mass-produced or machine made.

One of my interests includes being inspired by influential people who have made a difference in the world over time and is well known for their work.

Inspirational people such as Albert Einstein who is known for his work on the philosophy of science and the formula E=mc2, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era, and Martin Luther King, Jr born in 1929, who was the leader in the civil rights movement.

William Morris born in 1834 designed wallpaper, furniture and houses which he built himself. His quality craftsmanship and designs gave rise to the arts and craft movement, which influenced handcrafted in thoroughly designed work Manship throughout Europe. He is best known for his pattern designs especially on fabric and wallpaper. His patterns are inspired by natural forms such as plants and small animals. These sorts of designs were highly used for out of this area on walls, ceilings, stained glass and curtains. William Morris influenced and changed the world of keeping finely handcrafted materials used throughout history and focusing on the quality of true craftsmanship rather than quantity.

Mood Board

This mood board focused on the true work of handmade items used for interior spaces in this era. I chose to keep the theme very natural as William Morris used a lot of patterns concerntrated on nature and reoccurring patterns based prominently on plants.

Modern/ Arts and Crafts Interior

In this modern day take on the Arts and Craft Movement I decided to simplify the design a lot and focus more on the natural element that has been shown throughout.

Pattern

William Morris used a lot of reoccurring plant patterns, so I decided to incorporate that design into my mock up. I really like these two patterns as they are both similar but they don't clash and they actually help tie in the natural concept.

Handcrafted

Since this time was known for making everything by hand, I chose iteam that are made out natural material specifically wood/ wood like materials to mimic what was done in this era.
